Dejima was a man made Island on Nagasaki harbour that the Dutch East India Company operated their trading post from the 17th to the 19th century. The Island is now surrounded by reclaimed land and all the original buildings are long gone but they are restoring the trading post as a museum. A lot of porcelain from Arita, which I visited yesterday, would have passed through Dejima on its way to markets in Europe.
